31 Days to a Stress Free Holiday Season - Day 20

Yesterday I shared some great charities that we feel led to give to. They all serve different purposes but are all doing God's work of sharing love with those in need. Most of these charities we give money or things to but we never get to see the recipient up close and personal. Well today I'm going to share with you my favorite thing we do at Christmas time - Homeless Bags!!!

As a family we started this tradition about 4 years ago. It started as 5 small bags we always kept in our car in case we ran into someone on the streets that was asking for help and has blossomed into a great Christmas tradition for our family. It has been such a blessing to us that I don't see it going by the wayside anytime soon!!!!

We all load up and head to Dollar Tree and pack baskets and baskets full of items to fill our bags. Snacks, drinks, gloves, toiletries, cards, Bibles, travel mugs, soup packets, cookies, socks, hand warmers, shirts, hats, popcorn, and so many other wonderfully fun things.

Then in assembly line style we all work together to fill the bags to the brim!! It's chaotic but so much fun!! Then after we are stuffed to the bursting point with Christmas Dinner, we head out to our city's downtown area and scout out people in need.

Over the years we have really refined our system of who we give them too. It's interesting to see us all debating if someone is walking home from work, heading to get some food, or is truly living on the street. Every year the bags seem to get bigger (last year we had duffle sized bags - maybe a little too much).

We love taking our children with us so they can see first hand the people that we are helping. It has really helped them think about how blessed we truly are and how wonderful it is to share with others!!!

Do you have any giving traditions that you do as a family??

31 Days to a Stress Free Holiday Season - Day 19

Tis the season for giving!! I love this time of year, I love spending money on other people! No, I take that back, I love spending money on people in need! Things that I would never buy for myself or my family, get plunked in the basket with a happy heart!

It's easy to get caught up in the rush of the season and left giving, true giving, go by the wayside. In order to make sure that giving is at the top of our priorities (and our children's) we always like to set down and make a list of things we would like to give to each year and how much. Last year our goal was to break $1000 worth of giving at Christmas and I know we excitedly exceeded that goal!!!! There's nothing more fun than buying toys for children, a goat and some chickens for a needy family, or buying clothes and shoes for a battered woman!!

If you are looking for some fun ways to give, here are some charities that we enjoy giving too!

Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child

Dayspring Villa Women and Children's Shelter (OK)

World Vision

Angel Tree (Prison Fellowship)

Salvation Army Angel Tree (Mall)

Pregnancy Resource Center of Owasso (OK)

31 Days to a Stress Free Holiday Season - Day 18

Another easy gift to make for little girls are dolls and doll clothes! I didn't make this doll but there are plenty of easy patterns online to make a simple doll. This doll came decked out in our college's colors, complete with pom poms!! I simply cut the pom poms off and now they are hair bows and I cut the outfit down the back, hemmed and added velcro!

This simple gown was made with leftover scraps from a pillow case gown I made my daughter and some ribbon. And the little dress, I made by making a simple pattern out of paper and fitting it to the dolls body and then hemming it. Again this little dress matches one I had made for Paige!!

I bought this doll when Paige was a newborn for $4 and the cost of clothes was $0 due to using scraps!!!

Do you have any DIY crafts on your plate???
Can you use up some scraps to complete your project??

31 Days to a Stress Free Holiday Season - Day 17

Girls are so easy to make gifts for, you can make doll clothes, make bubble bath, and sew adorable clothes for them. Little boys are not so easy to create things for, but when I saw Oopsey Daisy's wonderful car mat, I knew this was something I was going to have to tackle!!!

OopseyDaisyblog.com

Joann's had felt on sale for $2.99/ yard and had small sheets for 4/$1 so all the supplies cost me around  $8.00. Now remember this is a gift for my two boys to share .....so $4.00 for a gift that will keep my boys busy for hours......priceless!!!

I can't wait to show you the finished product and I'm sure the boys are going to LOVE this!!!!

31 Days to a Stress Free Holiday Season - Day 16

Still more fun for the guys today! I saw these Bird Seed Balls and knew this would be a fun craft that the boys could help me make!! I love doing projects with them!!

Again the supplies cost right under $5 for birdseed and peanut butter and I already had hooks and ribbon. I should be able to get about 6 balls out of the birdseed I got, so another beautiful gift for less $1 a piece, that's a great deal in my book! Not to mention how much fun we will have watching the birds eat their snack this winter!!

31 Days to a Stress Free Holiday Season - Day 15

Boys are soooooo hard to make things for and to shop for, so when it came to figuring out something to make the three grown men in our family, I was at a loss. I started digging around online and finally came up with a great idea!!

You may think this is weird, but we have an teeth picking obsession going on after meals during the holidays. So what would be better than something practical that would actually get use?? Nothing in my book!

I got my essential oil at the health food store and again, super cheap, but thoughtful and yummy!!

31 Days to a Stress Free Holiday Season - Day 14

Sick and tired of serving the same meals week after week? Well, now is a great time to start tasting some of those recipes you've added to your menu! Even just adding a new side to your meal once or twice a week or serving a special dessert on a Saturday night will help you get better prepared for you Thanksgiving feast.

Make sure you write down what you liked and disliked about the item. Did it take for ever to make or need longer in the over? Make note. It will help you plan your day accordingly and help you eliminate things that will take way to much effort or didn't go over well with your family.

Have you tried any of your recipes yet? Did any favorites pass the test?

31 Days to a Stress Free Holiday Season - Day 13

Bird Nest Necklaces!!

When I saw this tutorial online and these beautiful little nests, this mama bird just HAD to have one. So I headed to Micheal's with my 40% off coupon and got my supplies. Everything cost under $5 and I could get about three of the necklaces out of the supplies, so that made the gifts even less expensive!!

Weheartit.com

I made mine with three little pearls and made my mom one with two. It was so easy to do and didn't require any special or expensive tools. I made them both in about 15 minutes while watching a movie.

They are a sweet little reminder of my sweet little chickies, and I just love wearing it!

31 Days to a Stress Free Holiday Season - Day 12

For the next few days, I am going to show you some of the easy home made gifts that I will be making this year for Christmas!

This year we are focusing on a homemade Christmas with gifts from the heart. Many of the things I am making, I already have supplies on hand for but somethings I had to purchase.
Even purchasing supplies and the time it takes to make the gifts will still help us spend less this year and will free up money to spend on those in need.

This scarf was a little confusing to knit when I first started but once I realized I need to knit/purl/knit purl, it turned out fantastic. It took about three hours to make but I broke it up over a few days! I am making a few different colors and they are all beautiful.

The yarn is from Red Heart and is called Sashay!! If you need help here is a link to an easy tutorial!
